I was lucky to document an event at The Groucho private members club for Zata Banks, founder of Poetry Film, an organisation that sources and screens films made from and of poems.
It was my first paid gig as a photographer and of the hundreds of photos I took that night, this one is my favourite. In it two poets shake hands, as one takes her leave. In the background a poet is being interviewed on film for the BFI and to the left another poet waits for her turn to speak.
There are a lot of stories told in this photo, and one omitted – that of the woman who has her back turned to the camera – the story she tells only visible in the face of the woman leaving.
